BIRDS
Eritrea has a bird list of over 500
species but there has been little ornithological activity for some
thirty or forty years. Sadly, long running disputes with Ethiopia
and political instability have impacted habitat and species
adversely as well as limiting opportunities for visiting birders.
With little tourist infrastructure, Eritrea is likely to appeal to
the more adventurous or pioneering birder. . This small country can
however be a rewarding destination for birders who in just a few
days could see a substantial number of species, including many near
endemics and regional endemics as well as countless passage
migrants.

MARINE LIFE
More than 200 of Eritrea ’s islands belong to the
Dahlak archipelago with a great opportunity for yacht cruising
(scuba)
diving and (pearl) fishing. Charter yachts are available for
hire in Massawa. Only four islands are inhabited, with a total
population of just 2,500, who still maintain their traditional
lifestyle of fishing and herding goats and camels.
The isolated and uninhabited Dahlak Islands, and the
rich feeding grounds which surround them, attract large numbers of
nesting sea birds from all over the red sea.

ARCHITECTURE
Asmara, the capital of the small East African country of
Eritrea, bordering the Red Sea, is one of the most
important and exciting architectural 'discoveries' of
recent years. Built almost entirely in the 1930s by the
Italians, who transformed it into a hotbed of radical
architectural innovation, Asmara has one of the highest
concentrations of Modernist architecture anywhere in the
world.

By

Asmara, the capital of the small East African country of

recent years. Built almost entirely in the 1930s by the
Italians, who transformed it into a hotbed of radical

illustrated with previously unpublished archival
material and specially commissioned photography,
chronicles the colonial past and remarkable survival of
a city that has evocatively been described as "the Miami
of Africa". |
